FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Ernie Fletcher presented today a $100,000 homeland security check to the City of Nicholasville to fund equipment for the county’s firefighters.

“It is critical that we provide our commonwealth’s first responders with the equipment they need to do their jobs,” said Governor Fletcher. “Incidents involving the release of hazardous materials require such specialized equipment to respond effectively. Local firefighters regularly respond to threatening situations throughout the area, and that is why ensuring they have the equipment to do their job effectively will remain a priority of my administration.”

Fletcher, who was joined at the Nicholasville Fire Station #3 by the Director of the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security Alecia Webb-Edgington, presented the funding to the City.

The homeland security check presented today to Nicholasville Mayor John Martin will provide fire fighters throughout Jessamine County with Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) units which will provide respiratory protection in the event of a chemical or hazardous materials emergency. These new SCBA units will be compatible with Lexington, Garrard, and Madison County firefighters along with the regional Hazardous Materials (HazMat) team. A portion of the funding will also go towards the purchase of a Cascade System which refills the SCBA units with air. The new system will replace a 20 year old system that is no longer compliant with federal and state standards. The City of Nicholasville is responsible for the management of the grant.
